I received my Canon G11 yesterday, charged the battery and and sat down to read the manual. During this process I picked up a plastic hot shoe protector and stuck it on my new Canon thinking it would be a good idea since it didn’t come with one. During my arm chair learning experience I could not get the internal flash to function. You guessed it, with the hot shoe protector the camera “thought” it had an external flash and would not turn on. Even though it was plastic and a non conductor. Food for thought.

The solution is to file the lower part of the protector so it does not activate the hot shoe connector. I’ll post more information in the future.

Official price in the US is $500 USD. You can get it discounted, usually down to about $450 USD in some places. Check out the Amazon.com banner on the top right side. Canon G11’s price is changing from time to time.

Just ordered my G11 from Buy.com. I should have it in my grubby little hands sometime next week. Hope to gain lots of tips and tricks from this site!

I hope you are still planning on doing more comprehensive coverage of CHDK. It’s one of the reasons why I went with a Canon — we already have a Nikon DSLR. I’d like to see some step-by-step instructions on installation and how to use a >4GB SDHC card.

    Thanks for providing this site!
